01 / AWARENESS

The six layers of self

Most people live on the surface of themselves and call it 'me'. Below the visible behavior are five quieter layers — and below those, the operating model. Knowing where you are right now is the beginning of being able to change.

L1

Behavior行为

What you actually do, in the world.

L2

Thought想法

The narration that runs alongside the behavior.

L3

Emotion情绪

The body's verdict before the mind catches up.

L4

Motivation & fear

What pulls you toward and away from things.

L5

Belief信念

What you assume the world is, by default.

L6

Identity身份

The story you take as 'who I am'.

Reflection prompt

02 / MODELS

A library of mental models

A mental model is a compact tool for thinking clearly. The more models you have, the more dimensions of the problem you can see — and the harder it becomes to be fooled, by others or by yourself.

Map ≠ territory

Your model of reality is not reality. Useful — necessary — but never confuse the model for the thing. The map is what you can update.

Base rates

Before reading the story, ask: how often does this kind of thing usually happen? Most surprises evaporate when you put the base rate on the page first.

Feedback loops

Reinforcing loops compound; balancing loops resist. Most "stuck" feelings are loops you can't see. Once mapped, they become moveable.

Inversion

Don't ask 'how do I succeed?' — ask 'how would I guarantee failure?' The answer to the second is usually shorter, sharper, and more actionable.

Follow the incentive

When behavior makes no sense, look at what's being rewarded — by money, by status, by survival. People are rarely irrational; the incentive is just hidden.

Second-order effects

The first effect is what happens directly. The second is what happens because of that. Most disasters live in the second column. Plan one column over.

Asymmetric bets

Prefer choices where downside is small, bounded, and survivable, and upside is uncapped. The shape of the payoff matters more than its expected value.

Before disagreeing, restate the other side stronger than they did themselves. If you can't, you don't yet understand it — and your disagreement is a guess.

time时间

Compounding复利

Tiny advantages, applied consistently across long horizons, dominate large bursts. Most of life's leverage is compounding in disguise.

The cost of optionality

Keeping every door open is itself a choice — usually the most expensive one. Closing some doors is what lets the others actually open.

Correlation ≠ cause

Two things moving together don't mean one moves the other. Both may be driven by a third you haven't named yet. Always ask: what else?

Identity over outcomes

'I am someone who shows up' beats 'I'll show up if I feel like it.' Decisions ride on identity sentences, not motivation sentences.

03 / EMOTION

Inner weather, named

Emotions move like weather: they arrive, build, peak, and pass. The trouble starts when we mistake weather for climate. The work isn't to feel less — it's to know which signal you're inside of, and stay on your feet.

Stress response zones

window of tolerance耐受窗
Fight / flight / fix

High arousal: racing thoughts, reactivity, urgency that distorts. Useful in emergencies, expensive to live in.

Available, present, awake

You can feel things and still think. Most growth happens here. Goal: widen this window over years.

Freeze / shut down冻结 / 关闭

Numb, foggy, disconnected. Often follows long hyper periods. The repair isn't 'try harder' — it's safe re-entry.

04 / ATTENTION

Attention is your real currency

Whatever your attention sits on, you become. Distraction is not a personal failure — it's the design of the environment. The work is to design back.

90+ minutes, single object90+

The state where new ideas form, where confusion turns into structure. Almost extinct in always-on environments — but reproducible by design.

Most "real" professional output lives here. Phone in another room; one tab; no clock-watching.

D3 · Light task

Email, errands, admin

Necessary, finite, batchable. Don't do this in the hours your D5 self could be working.

D2 · Passive consumption

Scrolling, watching

Feels like rest. Mostly is rest's opposite — high-stimulus low-depth. Time leaves no trace.

D1 · Real rest

Sleep, walks, stillness, presence

The level that recharges all the others. Without enough D1, D5 collapses. Most of "I can't focus" is "I haven't rested."

05 / IDENTITY

Habits don't build outcomes — they build a self

Every action votes for an identity. Done often enough, the identity solidifies, and the next action becomes 'who I am' rather than 'what I'm trying'. This is where lasting change comes from.

From doing to being

the identity loop身份回路

A goal answers the question 'what do I want?' An identity answers 'who am I?' The first is fragile in the face of bad days; the second decides what you do on the bad days.

The mechanism: each action is a small vote for a kind of self. Repeated, the votes build belief. Belief, once stable, makes the next action almost automatic.

"You don't change your life by deciding to. You change it by becoming the kind of person whose life is shaped that way."
06 / DECISION

Think in three columns

Most decisions are made in the first column — the immediate consequence. The leverage is in the columns most people never write.

You're considering quitting a stable job to start something of your own.
trace the order of effects追踪不同阶的效应
1ST ORDER · immediate直接

What happens right away

Income drops. Schedule loosens. Identity wobbles. Friends ask 'are you sure?' Most people decide the whole question on this column alone.

2ND ORDER · downstream下游

What happens because of that由此而发生的事

You're forced to learn what you used to outsource. Your sense of agency grows or breaks. You discover whether your network was the firm or you.

3RD ORDER · long arc长弧

What you become

A decade later: either someone with a much larger surface area for risk and luck, or someone quietly aware they tried. Both versions are honorable. Neither is determined in column one.

07 / MEANING

A compass, not a map

A map tells you the route. A compass tells you the direction. Lives without maps are common; lives without compasses drift. The values you actually live by — not the ones you'd like to — are your compass.

Eight axes, one center

Each axis is a value. Where the polygon reaches the outer ring, the value is alive in your week — present in how you spend hours, money, attention, and risk. Where it shrinks toward the center, the value is claimed but not lived.

The compass doesn't tell you what to value. It just makes the gap between claim and life visible — and the gap is where the work is.

08 / SOCIAL

Four archetypes in every conversation

Most conflicts aren't between people — they're between modes of speech. Once you can name the mode, the conversation changes shape. The point isn't to be 'right'. The point is to make the kind of contact you actually want.

09 / GUIDE

A growth guide, not a cheerleader

The guide doesn't manipulate emotions, doesn't encourage dependency, and doesn't sell you motivation. It asks the question that makes the next move visible — and stays out of your way.

Guide引导

Hello. My job here is to help you think more clearly — not to make you feel better in the next 30 seconds. I'll often answer with a question. Pick one on the left, or write what's on your mind.

10 / EVOLUTION

Your personal evolution

Most progress is invisible at the daily scale and obvious at the multi-year scale. The dashboard pulls together emotional stability, focus, habits, and cognitive growth — so you can see whether the line is bending the right way.
